We've seen a great many helmets on television this year. The Paris police, the Israelis, Hamas (neither big helmet users), the Ukrainians, the Russians, and the reporters for various news agencies.

Granted the various helmets are designed for different purposes. It strikes me that the news agencies, having to buy only a few helmets can afford to get something a little nicer than the massive military forces, like the IDF.

Still, which helmets do you think are the best out there? Are some of them substandard, pr perhaps even just plain awful?

What makes you think the Israeli's aren't big helmet users ?

Bottom line helmets are designed to protect the wearer's head for shrapnel, etc. maybe even give to a modicum of protection from small arms fire. Depending on the helmet.

I may be biased, but we started out with the US Army M1 "Steel Pot" basically just like in WWII. Then we were issued the new Kevlar. For my $ I liked both, but the Kevlar is much improved over the GI Steel Pot.

I still have my steel pot, same as in WWII, anything has to be better, thing weights some.
Pet peeve of mine is old movies where the " soldier is wearing just the shell. Tip off is rivets on side.

I am partial of the helmets with the shiny brass spike on the top.

Might look a bit stupid with the words, "PRESS", stencilled on it though.

Of course it would look stupid with ‘PRESS' stencilled on it!

You need ‘PRESS' on a small pennant flying from your spike…

The best helmet is the one troops will wear. Our unit wore MICH helmets in Iraq. The interpretors and american civilians wore PASGTs. We took them off as soon as we were in the wire to hang from a carabiner on the armor. Then we could pop on the 8-point patrol cap or boonie hats while our heads dumped heat.

Stencilled!

What was I thinking?!?

For formal occasions like using my Landau I would have to find the gilt metal plate badge for the front that says "PRESS".

patrol cap or boonie hats
We preferred those to helmets especially in Panama and even at Benning[now Moore].
