A new book about being a Game Master for RPGs was published last week. I really liked it, so briefly reviewed it here: link

How would you compare it to X-D-M? Curious whether you have read that. They sound very different in their approaches. This sounds like a more earthy, nuts and bolts, take on DM'ing.

I appreciate the review. Thank you. Cheers!

I haven't read X-D-M myself, only seen/heard some Youtubers discuss it. So, based on that alone, my impression is that they are very different. So You Want To Be a Games Master is entirely focused on doing the basics of GMing – preparing scenarios, making rulings at the table, interacting with the players and running campaigns – and explaining how they work and how to do them yourself. Whereas X-D-M appears to me – and massive health warning, entirely third-hand – as much more focused on more advanced stuff; which rules you should use, what you should chuck out, GM fiat etc.

Does that help at all?

LOL! Yes. I bought a copy of X-D-M when it came out. I agree, it is for more advanced GM's who have experience under their belt.

Thanks for the explanation. It seems like a good book for a wanna-be DM I know. Might have to get him a copy for Christmas. Cheers!
