…a Sally Port

"Just finished a very enjoyable 2nd circumnavigation of the "Harry Gilmour" series, which is a fictionalised account of the life of a young guy in the RNVR in WW2 serving in submarines (very much recommended by the way).. for a couple of the books the submarine he's on is assigned to the near legendary 10th Submarine Flotilla [clicky], who were based at Malta.

One of the books (David) Black the author quotes as a source for the stories he uses in the Harry Gilmour books was this one by James Holland – and on a whim while in town I spotted it in Waterstone's while browsing, and bought it…"

There is nothing like walking up to the wall overlooking Grand Harbour (UK spelling) for the first time. As you approach it all you see is blue sky in mid Summer. As you get up to it you look over and down into each of three or four harbours, into Sliema, and, if you know the history, you will feel shivers. I can still see Illustrious, the Italians breaking the entrance boom or the Ohio tanker.

Almost as good as "Waterloo", the field that is. Wonderful island still.

I had the chance of visiting Malta on a language stay during the summer of 81 (actually, during one of the Gulf of Sidra incidents). There were still lots of people who could tell you of the siege. I visited the museum there, and also a church where they still keep the unexploded bomb that hit it.

Not just the WW II history but the medieval history as well. Great place to visit but hot in the summer like most of the med.
The air campaign is a favorite of mine to game.

Agree that 's a great place to visit… but not cheap… I remember that when I lived in Europe…
