"Faithful among the faithful, Géraud-Christophe Michel Duroc, Duke of Frioul (1772-1813), served Napoleon as a general, diplomat and above all as grand marshal of the palace: in this capacity, he was responsible, even during travels, the smooth running of services and the security of the imperial residences, while supervising the architectural and furnishing work requested by the Emperor. The approximately 2,800 letters of his correspondence, scattered between numerous institutions, reveal the daily functioning of the imperial court, in the sumptuous settings of the palaces as well as under the campaign tent.


Ministers, marshals, courtiers and administrators, artists and architects, princes and diplomats, without forgetting Napoleon himself: from 1799 to 1813, Duroc, a key figure in the system, wrote to multiple correspondents, attended all the major ceremonies as well only in the greatest battles of the reign, and his letters often reveal the thoughts of the Emperor…"
