The M2 Bradley was officially adopted in 1981 however it wasn't fielded by combat units until 1983.

From what I've been able to find it seems the 1st Bn/41st Inf, 2nd AD was the first unit to convert to M2 Bradley, starting in March of 1983. This was followed by 2nd Bn/41st Inf, 2nd AD in Summer 1983. Both Stateside units.

Supposedly the 1st Bn/7th Inf, 3rd ID and the 1st Bn/15th Inf, 3rd ID both converted to the M2 Bradley in Summer(possible in May???) to Fall of 1983 but I can't confirm. Both based in West Germany.

I've seen another source list the 1st Bn/58th Inf, 197th Infantry Brigade as having M2 Bradleys in 1983 as well. Again unconfirmed.

The only thing I have for the M3 is a comment from a vet that 2/1 Cav converted in March 1983.

I don't know if any other units were equipped by the end of the year. Any help is greatly appreciated!

PS – Even though I specified 1983, which is my primary interest, if you have any info of when a unit converted to the M2/M3 post 1983 it wouldn't hurt to build a timeline of when each unit received theirs.

I do know that 3rd ACR did not switch over to the M3 until 1987…

I was in the 1st Bde, 1st AD until August of 84, at that time I had yet to see a M2/M3 in any unit of the Division or in the VII Corps area. I also had only seen M-1's during two maneuver exercises up in the V Corps area in 1983.
