As the winter draws close, I am dusting off my Wotr figures and returning to wargaming ( I do this every few years). The en vouge rules this time seem to be Never mind the billhooks(Best name ever), and unusually for me, they look like they may be fun. However, I painted my minis for the battle of bosworth(Henry doesnt get much historical use). So my question is Could I do a large scale battle with these rules ? Lots of Men at arms, and some cavalry, the game will easily end up 500 pts a side. I'll try the rules out on a smaller scale first, but from youtube videos it looks like it would play quite fast. I've done Bosworth with Kings of War Historical before and that took about 3 hours. So will it scale do you think ? If not what are other in fashion ( likely to get a game) Rules, swordpoint ? |

As someone who was heavily involved in play testing the rules, my biased view would be that it would be perfectly possible to refight Bosworth using NMTBH's and that you will have great fun doing so! It's actually been done, as have all of the battles by Eric the Shed. you can read the battle report here: link 'Eric' has actually completed the set of the Main WOTR battles and his blog is well worth checking out to read through the battle reports. NMTBH's was designed as a game for skirmishes and small battles – Nibley Green as an example but we have been fighting larger battles in recent times with six players involved and around 200 points per side that we are able to complete in an evening. The game continues to be fun, seems to drive out sensible results and keeps everyone involved and feeling that they have a chance until the battle is decided. Good luck with your refight, I hope that you have as much fun with it as we do. |

Billhooks would work, so would To the Strongest. |

Thanks, that's a great link and I will immediately steal the rules for Stanley and Northumberland. I've just ordered the rules as an early Xmas pressie. |

Sorry follow up question now I've received and read the rules. Command is obviously a major part of the game, if I scale up the armies I'm going to need more orders. I assume the way to do that is add more commanders ? And that means add more commander cards to the play deck ? The excellent link above, Eric the shed, hints at using sub commanders, activated when their senior commander draws a card. Just wondered what people's views where are the best way to add more commanders is whilst keeping to the spirit of the game ? |

Hi HH, adding more command cards to the deck shouldn't be a problem, other than it will make a full turn longer. As every card except the last will activate a commander almost every unit will be activated. Remember that unactivated units can still fire once at the end of a turn. Having sub commanders is a good idea for large games as it will simply speed things up. |
