Finished the second Masked Man of Cairo. In the climactic battle, the love interest to be, Cordelia Russell, is fighting off the baboons with her parasol, adding yet another to the great British tradition whose weapon of choice is a bumbershoot:
Amelia Peabody of the Peabody and Emmerson books
Cordelia Russell as noted
Percival Pinkerton of the Howling Commandos
Colonel March of Scotland Yard
John Steed of the Avengers
(with honorable mention to Lobellia Sackville-Baggins. "There's some we miss more, but there's no denying she showed more spirit than most.")

And yet one never sees it as a weapon of choice with skill levels and tactical options. It's just "improvised weapon" as though it were a candlestick in Clue. Something needs to be done about this. Would anyone care to prove me wrong and point me toward a system in which one might advance in Umbrella Combat? Or opt to hook, stab or block on any given turn?

(Spare me, please, all citations of cartoons and comics in which the "umbrella" is actually a firearm of some sort. We have rules for the use of firearms.)

Doesn't Mary Poppins use one as a mode of transportation?
A much more peaceful use of the shade and rain device…

You mean UmBreljitsu in the title? Didn't Mr. Steed use his as an epee/foil in an at least one episode? I'd use rules for fencing ala' The Three Musketeers, but no slashing type attacks. And I'd add a rule to cover the "quick-opening umbrella" defense to block a thrust or maybe its made of kevlar giving armored protection.

Didn't Colin Firth do a pub fight with a brolly in Kingsmen?

You're right, mjkerner. Should have been Umbreljitsu. I'm a little under the weather.

Most people don't consider an umbrella a viable option when considering self-defense and everyday carry. However, tactical umbrellas have emerged as versatile tools that can provide more than just protection from the rain. They offer a legal and subtle way to defend yourself from potential threats.

I immediately think of Bartitsu, Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery's technique of gentleman's self-defence with cane, umbrella and walking stick. The man wrote several books on the subject, and the art has been kept up in England by dedicated followers.

Yuppers, Bartitsu is the way!

Paragon of the Eccentric steampunk novel has lots of Bartitsu fights.
