@Vallerotonda:

The Vatican is one of the countries I'd normally say I've visited, but where I have not spent a night. Just out of curiosity, where'd you stay?

RE the comment on which countries are visited, lived in, etc., what counts as lived in?

I did an Embassy Science Fellowship in Seoul. I lived on Yongsan Base, which is US sovereign territory. And I worked in the embassy, again US territory. Of course, I transited Korea to and from. And, while I did shop in the commissary a little, I mostly went out in town to buy groceries at a local shop (the little old lady who owned it called me "Yongpa", or colloquially "Onion Boy" because I bought up lots of her different onions. And recreation, hiking, canoeing, wargaming (there's a GW like shop), partying, etc. was in Korea. Did I live there or did I just visit there between work and (temporary) home?

21+. It's 32 if you count the Vatican.

Mollinary TGerritson, Piper909, Scotland, England and Wales are one country – the UK – but three nations. I've deliberately excluded Northern Ireland, definitely part of the UK but don't want to open the 'nation' can of worms in that case.
Of course Lichtenstein and the Vatican count, if you spent the night.
As for countries which split up later, just the one. But no idea what to do with having visited both Russia and the USSR? But I will count an extra one for Ukraine, as I have the stamps in my passport as of last month.

Then there are the genuinely idiosyncratic places like the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.

I'd count Wales and Scotland as their own "countries" (we could get into a tangle about what constitutes a "nation" versus a "state") even if I wasn't supportive of their pro-independence parties (which I am).

Hmm, cans of worms galore -- how 'bout Brittany or Catalonia?

As for countries which split up later, just the one.

Which one … Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Vojvodina or Kosovo? And what if I was there while the splitting was in progress?

And, of course, if one has only been to what is not called South Sudan, it doesn't seem right to say you have been to Sudan

And I'm still not sure if Moosylvania counts as USA or Canada …

Wow, I may be the high number.

104 sovereign countries

In the Traveler's Century Club (TCC)list of countries and island groups I score 140.

Only one of them (Singapore) was on business, and I'm not a veteran.
