On the back of the 'battlefields' question, how many countries have you visited? For the sake of clarity, 'visiting' means spending the night there at least, outside the airport! I'm not going to count Lichtenstein, Luxembourg or Qatar on my list).

Think I can reach 21+, but not much more.

Three meet your definition. I've been to Mexico for about an hour and flown over a number of other countries without landing, sometimes without even seeing them (Britain was covered with clouds).

3 ( unless you consider Wales and Scotland as separate, then 5).

Martin Rapier13 Nov 2023 10:39 a.m. PST

39 I reckon. If you live in Europe it is easy to rack up loads of countries. Does Yugoslavia count? (it was a loong time ago).

8, more or less. (Iffy about some nights, nations keep dissolving on me, and that's not even considering the whole "the past is another country" business.)

14bore, will contemplating the hair on a Korean hamburger lessen your sadness?

Well, let's see.

The UK, Guernsey, Ukraine, and St. Lucia.

I would also count Texas, but only Texans would agree with that one.

Hmmm, visited != lived there. I lived in the Netherlands, but I have never visited there.

I think I have lived in two countries, visited four, stopovers in three more. That's pretty weak, come to look at it.

I would love to see this poll.

I wonder if it would be interesting to see it broken out by stopovers vs military service-related visits vs tourist visits vs lived there.

5-ish. Depends on who was making what claim about one of the "countries" as to whether it was an independent country or not at the time. Which matter still isn't clear, so to avoid politics I won't name the place. (No, not part of the UK or anything in Europe at all. I only had a layover in England the one time.)

rustymusket13 Nov 2023 1:50 p.m. PST

I have been in Canada once. Hawaii, depending who you speak with about ownership.

The Last Conformist13 Nov 2023 2:37 p.m. PST

The spending the night criterion excludes a few countries I normally claim to have visited (no, I didn't merely change flights there). But by that criterion, about fifteen.

forrester13 Nov 2023 2:42 p.m. PST

France several times
Belguim once
Turkey once

Not exactly a Marco Polo

Mollinary13 Nov 2023 2:49 p.m. PST

Tgerritsen, UK, Scotland and Wales are the same country!

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP13 Nov 2023 3:16 p.m. PST

Ah. Didn't see "spend the night."

That lowers things. Some of the places I went, I wouldn't want to spend the night (and didn't).

3 (assuming being aboard a ship (or boat) in its national waters overnight is considered "spending the night in a country")

14. 16 if you consider Wales and Scotland as separate countries to England (which they do). Most (eight- or 10 incl Wales and Scotland) were done on my "grand tour" in 2019. The others were work related.

Spent the night alone or with company?

14, I think.

Changed planes in quite few others, but they don't count.

Wait, should I count the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the Russian Federation as two or just one?

Eight plus three day time visits.

Having spent time in the USSR as was could I now claim more countries since Ukraine and Russia are sovereign states?

21+ (30+, the specifics depending on how you count visiting places that are different countries now than they were when you visited), but alas, only six continents. DOM has sworn to visit Africa before I visit Antarctica.

Another 12 if you count participating in multinational naval operations with a country in their or someone else's territorial waters. That is, in fact, over night and outside the airport… ;) … and interacting in a substantive way with the local populace.

pmwalt14 Nov 2023 6:23 p.m. PST

21+. I think it was over 50 last time I counted. Did a lot of travelling in my younger days.

Scotland and Wales are both completely separate countries! (in response to the above from my pal Shagnasty)--

My case, I'll only note: seven.

Sheesh, I'm dogging it. But I didn't get any help from employment, or the military.
