Do you recreate historical battles or do you game hypotheticals mixing up the units of different columns for a generic game. Same as is done with say Napoleonics, we game battles that are made from our collections and occasionally a historical refight.

The early Sudan campaigns are great for fictional battles. If you read the book Fire & Sword in the Sudan, you see that there were all kinds of battles between Egyptian, Sudanese, local militias, Bashi-Bazouks, slavers, and others along with the Mahdi's forces. The actual historical battles don't seem to work (at least for me) as you can't replicate the desperation, concern about supplies, and the British players have too much knowledge about the battlefields. However, for fictional battle the early Sudan campaigns offer a lot of opportunity.

I've played most of the major historical battles, but also have run many hypotheticals, took part in a couple of campaigns that generated their own battles etc.

Most colonial battles that I have played have been hypothetical.

Historical almost exclusively, eg here

But I wrote a "Reflections" essay that generated a ton of interesting discussion on "Reasons NOT to refight historical battles":

Never gamed a historical battle. Always make them up.

There are a number of small scenarios written for "The Sword and the Flame" (TSATF) rules but which can be used with almost any "tactical" rule set.

The Jackson Gamers normally do fictional battles. In fact we had a whole campaign that took place along the "Green" Nile: link , link , link , link , and link

and in the "North Central" frontier: link , link , link , link , and link

Both but always period correct.

The real OOB, but a hypothetical scenario, and a little later than the date range provided.

Using the actual troops, I like to hypothesize what would have happened at Fashoda had half the French not got lost and instead, actually shown up. Not a face-off and a back-down, but a real slugfest in really crappy terrain.

As a follow up, I like to hypothesize that in the wake of a French or British win, someone (Europeans? Various Locals? Alliances?) might have swept in to engage a victorious, yet battle flagged force and secure the Crossroads of Africa.
