Has a friend or a game roup ever dissuaded or talked you out of starting a new scale ("We don't need 10mm. We already hve 6mm and 15mm."), starting a new genre ("Post-apocalyptic is so 80s!"), a new historical period ("7YW is way too linear! That's why we only play Napoleonics."), a certain army, or playing a different set of rules ("We never play XYZ!") that you really wanted to do but the other(s) didn't? You get the drift. Peer pressure can be a cruel mistress.

A. Never
B. Rarely
C. Sometimes
D. Often
E. Too many times to count
F. Doesn't apply because I only play solo

I have discouraged a friend several times from launching into some or another impulse project. The primo example was the 2 times he wanted to get into 10mm ACW. I reminded him that he already tried that once, lost interest, and sold off what he'd gotten. No one ever talked me out of anything, but I did flirt with SCW, but decided against it one I read about it and decided it was too static for my tastes.

I have often talked Myself out starting a new scale. I have been tempted often.

smithsco11 Nov 2023 11:00 p.m. PST

Rarely. More often I talk myself out of it. I have been talked out of napoleonics multiple times.

I'm with Mad Anthony Jones on this one.

Martin Rapier12 Nov 2023 12:51 a.m. PST

Never. My pals are usually excessively enthusiastic about whatever mad project any of us come up with.

Like Mad Anthony, I've convinced myself several times that something is a bad idea, though. Generally involving 10/12mm for some reason.

Usually I get encouraged to follow the stupidity

"Yeah, 10mm would be cool!"

"Paint up both sides! I'd love to try Neanderthal games"

Sort of twice, but it wasn't their intention either time.

Listening to wargamers talk about them soured me on point systems. Historicity and tactics had become irrelevant to them as they pursued the Great Wargaming Blue Light Special. Armies ceased to be companies, battalions or brigades to be 500 points. I try to give each side a roughly equal chance, but I don't care much for games that want me to pick an army as though I were buying groceries.

And the wailing of the franchise gamers--GW and FoW especially--have kept me well away from rules written to sell figures, with revisions every few years to make sure I'll never, ever have all the figures I need.

There is much to be learned from your fellow wargamers. You just have to learn what to listen for.

I go the other way. I'm the one trying to encourage other folks in the club to start projects I would like to play but trying to avoid building up my own cause I got so many projects running.

I have never been talked into a period, but I have talked several of my friends into doing one. :)

Only by the missus.

BrockLanders12 Nov 2023 3:37 p.m. PST

I've talked myself out of starting some new projects lately because I have a too many old unfinished projects still haunting me

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP12 Nov 2023 3:53 p.m. PST

You know, maybe Dana did. Not in his lifetime, you understand, but emptying out his game barn afterward--maybe 30,000 30mm Napoleonics, 2,000 25mm colonials, armies of FIW SYW (two different sets) AWI, ACW, Ancients, Fantasy…

Yeah, I could put together more armies. But who's going to empty out my garage?

Never been talked out of one by somebody else. Quite the opposite, they try to talk me into various periods.

I have talked myself out of a few periods. I have attempted to talk the group out of various rules with little success.

The Last Conformist13 Nov 2023 6:36 a.m. PST

Sometimes.

More often they try and talk me into their most recent obsession.
