NinJon says don't strip secondhand figures, just overpaint them.

But don't forget you need to ask their permission first :-)

Your expert hasn't worked with figures which were some child's first efforts at miniatures painting--multiple coats, and so thick as to obscure the detail of the figure.

And yes, of course the figure's permission. Written permission, signed and witnessed. This is the Twitchy Twenties, after all.

I watched that episode and must disagree. It is situational depending on how much detail the original painting layers have obscured.

I have found 90% IPA very effective at removing paint.

The guy in the video didn't say NEVER strip.
He said that you don't always have to strip.

He's right for the figures he chose – but what about the ones that arrive from Ebay that were painted with gloss enamel paints….?

(Hint – don't strip these either unless you really must have them if they are OOP or something, just put them back on eBay for some other sucker…. evil grin)

Bill, did you actually watch this one? He actually say "sometimes you need to strip" at about the 5:00 mark.

But no way I'll watch the whole thing. I endured enough 70's music in the 70's. Why is he doing that to an otherwise reasonably informative video?

Need gloss enamel paint stripper? Here ya go… ;-)

The guy in the video didn't say NEVER strip.

But he said it in the title of his video. grin

Bill, did you actually watch this one?

Of course.

Okay, sure, the title of the video is misleading, but Ninjon's a YouTube content provider and, like all such, he's looking for views… I've found his videos generally pretty good, and we have to remember that (on the whole) he's not trying to appeal to us: he's talking pretty specifically about large plastic minis – GW stuff – and I have to agree, stripping those is generally way more trouble than it's worth (and I've dumped many, many, pounds of old badly painted lead into Simple Green). I also don't know how many of us have spent much time in GW land, but I can attest that it's filled with legions upon legions of bare gray plastic, and Ninjon and others are trying to convince folks that it's possible to do better without necessarily making it a lifestyle choice. So I'd say he gets should get some slack.

Agree with you – he's one of the more watchable painting "gurus".
