I'm doing some background for a mini campaign set in April 1865, post evacuation of Petersburg/Richmond.

Sailor's Creek and its component parts will feature as part of this.

General histories can scrape together enough of the basics to provide what I want, but none them are all that clear on Lee's whereabouts from Amelia Court House to Farmville.

Lots of things happened but none of the items I've read mention where Lee was while his subordinates (eg Ewell) were screwing it up!

Anyone got a handle on this?

I went on Yahoo and typed in Lee's route to Appomattox and found a couple of maps that explain Lee's route.

You might try, "No One Wants to be the Last to Die": The Battles of Appomattox, April 8-9, 1865," by Chris Calkins. He's pretty much the authority on Lee's Retreat. It is available from Savas Beattie savasbeatie.com/no-one-wants-to-be-the-last-to-die-the-battles-of-appomattox-april-8-9-1865

If its anything like the roads I've travelled in April, you can bet there were orange cones and barrels all over it.

Worse further north, P Carl. I once took better than an hour to cover a single mile headed north out of Herndon VA, and that was without road work or bad weather. I think Virginia is still trying to render the Yankee-occupied parts of the state north of the Rappahannock uninhabitable.

I am tour historian for Stephen Ambrose Hallowed Ground. We finish in Richmond area. After seeing the "breakthrough" at Pamplin Park, we follow Lee's retreat to Appomattox. If driving, the route has a free, audio guide explaining what happened at various sites. Sailor's Creek is well worth a visit. Chris Calkins, formerly the site manager, gave us wonderful talks on the field. His successors continue to do well. For gamers, the battle rewards a double-blind game with a judge. For anyone interested, Chris's books are on point.
