Discourse Minis claims GW has screwed up Warhammer again.

YouTube: link

Summary: "new" rules not innovative, magic phase replaced by spells being cast at different times (more rules).

jgawne03 Nov 2023 7:02 p.m. PST

Chess would be much more interesting if they changed the rules every year.

I'm going to wait to see the entire rules.

If GW did nothing and released WHFB 3-7th edition in some form that would be boring and lack innovation. The nostalgia group will be happy.

If GW released it as some kind of alternate activation or push your luck die roll for actions, that might keep it like the video game so new players like it.

Sounds like a no win situation. If I were CEO, I'd go for the nostalgia group. That demographic probably has more disposable income

Discourse Minis' point is that if GW wasn't making money off the game before, going back to the 'nostalgia' fans won't be profitable.

Why not do like Marvel comics and have multiple parallel universes each with their own rule sets? Then you can play old school and new way rules depending on what you like and still be current.

I think if you have a rule set that works new rules should be expansions or adjustments to correct errors or anomalies, not whole new rules.

That's why I write my own rules.

Games and puzzles magazine…yes I am that old ..used to have a chess variant of the month column.

Minefields are fun (in chess!)

BTW – discourse minis is always angry with GW, they could ship free gold bars with 40K and she would still find something to hate.

Because that is her job…. evil grin

going back to the 'nostalgia' fans won't be profitable.

The counter argument is that back then it wasn't nostalgia and the players were in a game that was just too expensive (24 model units at maybe $3 USD each back then).

The game would not last: I'd do a big release of the box sets then switch to online only. Nostalgia would be in play now and $3 USD per model would seem like a steal compared to $7 USD

I'm expecting cheaper figures, 3-5 AU.

As they are mostly older moulds (assuming), up front costs are near nil.

Its well set up for more affordable figures, but will they do it?

They were selling the Mordhiem skaven for 3 Au each recently, so that's what I'm basing my assumption on.

60 Au a unit sounds reasonable, but less would be best, especially for basic grunts.

Oh, my goodness! Whatever will I do?! (I haven't played Warhammer in years.)

At one point she says "I'm genuinely trying to keep an open mind about this"

I'm still laughing.

I cannot really bother checking videos like this, but I presume that the author has not actually seen the rules yet (since they are coming out next year), and is just basing it on the company press releases?

Naturally – it's a detailed analysis of all that is wrong with the game based on not actually having a copy of the game….

… apparently one of the worst things is that it is IGOUGO and the modern gamer just doesn't have the patience for that approach anymore…

I remember playing 40K in the Rogue Trader days. When every month White Dwarf brought new rules that superseded the new rules from the previous month, lather, rinse, repeat, until eventually you drilled back to the original rule in the book that each monthly installment superseded. It was fun!

I haven't really kept up with WarHammer. I had a lot of fun with it when I played. Then my opponents moved away, the rules and miniatures changed a couple of times, I had children, and now I play other games.

Complaining about GW has been a hobby in its own right for several decades now.

Honestly I plan to buy some Brettonians to complete my existing force and paint them up. I still have a large Orc, Wood Elf, and Empire army from the old days.

I will likely just use Dragon Rampant for the rules and eschew the Warhammer rules.

Games Workshop sells models. They should probably make the rules open source at this point and just support with figures and boxed games. They could make their own version of the D&D SRD with their rules core set and let the fan base go nuts with their own variations.

See what catches on and then make figures to support that.
