A novel of prehistoric America by Ardath Mayhar. This novel is set in the Ice Age southwest. It concerns the adventures of Do-Ma-Ti a hunter of the Badger Clan and his quest to find a totem for his unborn child. The people of his tribe live in earth lodges and hunt bison and mammoths. He is threatened by dire wolves short-faced bear and the large North American lion-Panthera atrox. These are quite typical of American fauna 12k-20k years ago. There are also deer and antelope. Smilodon Megatherium and Mastodon do not appear but may have already gone extinct by the time the novel is set. I liked the novel and found it to be a page turner. Human enemies are the enigmatic "Long-Heads."
