Which film, that features a submarine in a prominent role, is the best?

Disco Joe01 Nov 2023 7:02 p.m. PST

For me it is Das Boot.

But honorable mention due to a terrific sound track to Crimson Tide.

Das Boot made one feel that you were really in the sub.

"The Enemy Below" is probably at the top of the list for me, but there are a number of good ones.

Does "Balance of Terror" count?

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP02 Nov 2023 8:50 a.m. PST

I believe Balance of Terror was just a remake of The Enemy Below in space.

Just because no one else has said it, The Bedford Incident (also The Enemy Below set in the Cold War).

With all that I'm mind, my vote would be for The Enemy Below.

The Neptune Factor. A thrilling excursion to the bottom of a saltwater aquarium…

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

The Hunt for Red October

Das Boot is number 1 with a huge tie at 2nd; too many to list.

Das Boot

Das Boot
Crimson Tide
Grey Lady Down for the claustrophobia it induced in a teenage me, and featuring a young Ronnie Cox, who I later recognised half way through Robocop.

"I believe Balance of Terror was just a remake of The Enemy Below in space."

Certainly, which is why I rate it as a submarine movie. (It was clear even in the first broadcast, when I'd never heard of The Enemy Below.) But I think on balance it's an improved version. Possibly the shorter running time helped?

Note that it was outright theft, by the way, not purchase: I can't find any acknowledgement in the TV episode either of the movie or the book the movie was based on.

No one has suggested Fantastic Voyage yet!

Zephyr102 Nov 2023 8:48 p.m. PST

On a lighter note, Operation Petticoat. The witch doctor scene was just great…! ;-)

Oberlindes Sol LIC I did but misidentified it as
Fantastic Journey.

Das Boot
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

For very different reasons.

Warspite106 Nov 2023 7:11 a.m. PST

Das Boot,
Run Silent, Run Deep,
Above Us The Waves
in that order.

This last is a 1955 British film about the X-Craft attacks on the Tirpitz.
