Just picked up my first Perry figures for my next project: The Sudan.

It was quite a heavy box.

Now that is the definition of Shiny New and delightful. Big fan of the Sudan period. Just too many other projects in the hopper to branch out. Good luck with the project!

I can't wait to see your Sudan project on the table.

Looking forward to seeing them as you progress!

Inspired by Slatin Pasha's book Fire and Sword in the Sudan, I've been slowly collecting Perry early Sudan figures, too. Very impressed the way your project is starting out!

Just now, I'm starting to collect Arabs, so I will be interested in how the plastic figures work out for you.

The Sudan was the first project that I started collecting all the figures before beginning the painting. Up until that point, I bought figures without any plan.

I had Zulus, Boers, and Pathans at that point. The deciding factor was that RalPartha was conveying from lead and I knew the prices would go up. I set up an Excel spreadsheet to guide and track my purchases.

I've been planning and executing pretty large projects for years because I believe that decision and planning are the only ways forward (I know that a lot of gamers muddle through). It's the only way that works for me.

1. Decide period – this usually takes 2-3 years. In this case deciding took 5 years. This is a massively important step for me.
2. Tie yourself in by spending more than you'll ever recoup if you change your mind. Paint or lose.
3. You are in. No distractions and you've blown your budget anyway. In this case £2.00 GBPK is a three to five year budget; I will probably add to it but in dribbles, and we are talking wallet money. Then there will be a stage 2 order to finish the collection (at this point I'll know what is important). At present my 'Stage 2 order' is the Egyptian element for the early war (1st El Teb, Khartoum, etc) and possibly a truncated camel Corps and Guards Brigade.

We shall see. The point is, this is a collection in a box. I'm in for the long haul – as usual.

Yea, there is great joy to be had in the planning and purchasing of a new major project. The next joy is when everything comes together and is table ready.
The last stage, as you said, is adding that unit you didn't know you needed.
BTW – That last stage never ends.

Wow! That is beginning unlike all of mine. I'm a "dribs and dabs" purchaser.

Shagnasty,

Give it time, you will succumb.
