I decided to add Rall's grenadier regiment to my 28mm AWI forces.

I chose Perry's metals, got three packs of Rall's marching poses and a Rall command pack, 24 figs. total.

In looking at some online images for some rudimentary uniform research, I came across Don Troiani's several renderings of Rall's soldiers.

On his Facebook page he comments on a painting of a Rall soldier, he says that in 1776 Rall's regiment "would not have had moustaches since it was a garrison regiment. Only the 'grenadier company' of the regiment would have had moustaches while in garrison."

This confused the living daylights out of me.

When he says "garrison regiment", is he referring to them being stationed in Trenton in late 1776?

Is that implying that the entire regiment WOULD have moustaches while on active campaign but then would shave them off while in garrison?

Also, he mentions Rall's regiment having a "grenadier company" in addition to the line companies.

But the entire regiment is a 'grenadier regiment', so what exactly would a grenadier company of a grenadier regiment be composed of, like the best soldiers of the regiment forming a special flank company but with the same uniforms as the rest of the regiment?

So was Rall's regiment just a "normal" (for lack of a better term) Hessian regiment that just wore Grenadier-like uniforms? Or was the entire regiment ACTUAL grenadiers that also had a specialized grenadier company?

Perry Miniatures' Rall packs are all sculpted with moustaches. So are Perry's meant to portray just the grenadier COMPANY that Troiani is describing, or are they meant to portray the regiment's typical line companies?

Thanks in advance.

Lefferts, which is still the best reference, as far as I can determine, shows a member of the a regiment sans moustache. Whether the regiment had actual flank companies, I do not know.

Raised in 1703 Grenadier Regiment Rall had six companies, one of which was designated the Flugel-Genadier Companies, or flank company.

Their Grenadier company served in Grenadier Battalion Kohler. The battalion was renamed Graff in 1778.

One thing we can be fairly sure of- is that they would not have been carrying many grenades.
