While he might have been a bit off base, Pythagoras did have a point about not eating fava beans – there is a geneti disorder called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency which occurs in people from the Mediterranean region who have severe haemolysis (red blood cell breakdown) if they eat fava beans
