Of your recent miniature wargaming rules purchases, how many were in traditional print, and how many were in digital format?

(If you bought a ruleset in both print and digital, count it as two purchases.)

0% print/100% digital
10% print/90% digital
etc.

100% Print

I might have a corresponding digital copy but I don't use them.

My BLOODY DAWN rules for the Alamo sell for $10 USD at Wargame Vault, and are in black and white except for the cover. Anyone who buys them gets the full color digital version (LOTS of photos of the game in progress) for free.

Last two purchases were digital. Most of my rules are printed, though.

I buy hardcopies if possible. I buy digital as well, when possible. I love the ability to print off select pages as needed.

If a ruleset is only in PDF, I will try to get a POD copy from Lulu.com. I really like hardcopies. Cheers!

I'm fine with PDFs, but my last 10 purchases were all actual printed books.

jdpintex25 Oct 2023 7:54 p.m. PST

100% Print.

I mix them up equally. If I really like a set that I bought digitally, though, I will print it.

100% Print

100% print.

I did download two sets off the interweb, but printed them out. What use are they otherwise?

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP26 Oct 2023 2:24 a.m. PST

My most recent purchase was digital. It often depends on the rules. If it's a game that I'm very interested in I will probably get the printed copy, something I'm only curious about most likely I will get the digital copy.

In the past few years it's been 70% digital 30% printed.

I like when a digital copy is offered with the printed copy.

The majority are pdf as I have a business color laser printer. I can print something generally as nice as a hard cooy. Plus it will lay flat as I bought a comb binding machine in the 90s. If the rules are 150 pages or more I may buy a hard copy. Or if there is no pdf option.

Thanks

John

If you live in the Third World with unreliable or expensive post services, digital is a must.

Big Red Supporting Member of TMP26 Oct 2023 4:28 a.m. PST

50% Print, 50% Digital. I prefer a set that is offered in both but if I'm only curious I often choose digital.

Personal logo Mister Tibbles Supporting Member of TMP26 Oct 2023 4:55 a.m. PST

100% digital, mainly Wiley Games.

The Last Conformist26 Oct 2023 5:44 a.m. PST

This year: 100% digital
Last year: 100% physical

This tells you less about any change in my preferences than about the perils with small number statistics.

This and last year combined: 25% digital, 75% physical

Deucey Supporting Member of TMP26 Oct 2023 6:22 a.m. PST

90% hardcopy.

I did buy a test of resolve scenario book PDF because shipping from England is so expensive. Of course, I then printed it out and stapled it as a booklet.

UshCha Supporting Member of TMP26 Oct 2023 6:48 a.m. PST

Don't really buy rules we use our own. They are all Digital but we always have Print QR sheets and sometimes a Print of the rules, but usually the rules are on tablet if we really need them in a game but its rare.

If I do need scenario type stuff its always PDF, why waste space and money. Print bits out if really necessary.

Personal logo Grelber Supporting Member of TMP26 Oct 2023 7:33 a.m. PST

The last two rule sets I bought were PDF. I printed a copy of each and put them in a binder. I am currently plotting to buy a hard copy supplement to rules I already bought in hard copy.

25 Print/ 75% digital. I like downloaded the free rules of the internet or gets rules from wargame vault. Just not into long 100 page ruleset or paying $30 USD-40 for a set of rules.

The Nigerian Lead Minister26 Oct 2023 1:40 p.m. PST

I buy printed copies. If they are free, I download them and print them.

Valmy9226 Oct 2023 5:45 p.m. PST

A related follow up question for the digital crowd. How often do you play from the digital at the game table (aside from computer moderated that are a different animal from how do you acquire your book)?

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP27 Oct 2023 12:17 a.m. PST

Last couple of years is all digital for me.

Reasoning for me is that many of these I want a look to see if they fit what I'm looking for and probably never play most of them so it is a smaller investment. Also I have a business colour laser printer and binding machine so it is still often cheaper to print my own from a PDF.

I have bought hard copy rules that I know I'm going to use but those that fitted that bill have been few and far between recently and we are mostly playing modified older rules (often so modified it could be difficult to ID the original) or home grown. BBB is about the only one we haven't mucked about with.

UshCha Supporting Member of TMP27 Oct 2023 12:53 a.m. PST

Valmy92 – Almost never- If I need the specs for an army (e.g. tank capabilities) I will print out the required specs, not the whole multi army list. As befor printed QR sheet in a plastic wallet unless off the new printer that can pringt double sided. Rules in pdf on the tablet but rarely required.

"How often do you play from the digital at the game table"

Never, it is just far too inconvenient. Even digital scenarios are a pita, and I usually print them out. Occasionally I've used my tablet with a digital scenario on for setup purposes, but paper is just so much easier.

Personal logo Mister Tibbles Supporting Member of TMP27 Oct 2023 10:23 a.m. PST

All the time. I love my fast charging Samsung tablet, which is 1 year old. Takes less space than a rulebook. I even scan my print books into pdf.
