It's under Renaissance.

Consequently, a lot of WorR posts end up here instead of the WotR board.

The Renaissance technically started around 1400, so…..

Pretty sure my wife would have held that in England, the Middle Ages ended with the death of Richard III and the Renaissance began an hour or so later when Henry VII was crowned.

You guys haven't lived with a SERIOUS redhead and Tudor freak.

Wotr us generally regarded as early renaissance these days – although clearly there is an argument for very late mediaeval

But it can be in both categories.

The classification isn't the thing. It's just that War of the Roses topics end up in Medieval Discussion. So it's just about improving communication.

I have added it to Medieval. grin

Humble opinion: The last 'medieval' battle was Fornovo in 1495. The first 'renaissance' battle was Pavia in 1525. Thus, WOTR is comfortably 'medieval'.

Yes, periodization is a minefield. What constitutes Medieval? What constitutes Renaissance?

That being said, the tradition is that WotR is medieval, so there should it go.

Damon.

If "The last 'medieval' battle was Fornovo in 1495. The first 'renaissance' battle was Pavia in 1525", where do Cerignola 1503, Agnadello 1509 and Ravenna 1512 fit in?

Actually Renaissance is not a very good epoche for political or even military history. It works only for arts and culture, being parallel to the gothic in northern europe until the end of the 15th century.
A better term for the period 1500-1800 would be early modern.

dapeters18 Oct 2023 10:19 a.m. PST

I heard academics argue the Renaissance begins soon after the first crusade. But as AnselmFranz it really depends on where, Itally was in it in the the 14th century Northern Europe after the reformation (this would include England)-MHO
