Here's a typical take from him if you don't know him: link

Now there's one very obnoxious individual for you!

Well meaning but – he does witter on.

I have appreciated much of his content about the AWI, including the basics around the dress, drill etc as I educated myself about the period [being an ACW and Napoleonic buff].

As far as this specific content dissecting the ahistorical treatment, well, that seems par for the course for Mel Gibson's "historical" movies. I recall the constant stream of ouitrage from our British brothers about "Braveheart".

So I can excuse Brandon's emotive response about the Patriot.

p.s. – I haven't met anyone in my wargames circles that thinks the Patriot was particularly enjoyable, much less accurate. I can't bring myself to watch it for more than a few minutes.

Yes, twitters on and in his obsessive quest to indict the film for EVERY conceivable "error," he actually incorrectly sites elements that were, actually, authentic.

But to cite his own errors would be as "obsessive" and tedious as his own presentation.

I enjoyed THE PATRIOT and even use it with classes, when I have time, but I use it about half to show how WRONG Hollywood gets things.

A little overly dramatic and long-winded. Check out the "History Buffs" review of "The Patriot."

"The Patriot" was Gibson's attempt to use the "Braveheart" template for the AWI. It didn't work.

I don't watch the Patriot for history, I find it a rollicking yarn.

Add me to the list of people who enjoyed the movie. I also enjoyed "Hogan's Heroes" and "The Rat Patrol."

Yeah, same as 79thPA.

Thanks

I think he's awesome. Been watching him for some time. He is very dedicated to bringing true history to his audience and is very passionate about correcting myths and misconceptions. As far as some comments above describing him as "obnoxious" and "long-winded"….well I mean he loves and cares about the topics he talks about. Obnoxious? That is the last word I would ever think of when it comes to Brandon. Wow.

Pretty much all of us here have read numerous books on the military periods we study, yes? Reading a book requires a minimum of attention span and takes time to actually sit and do it, yes?

So why should a video or documentary or video piece about an historical topic be any different?

Baranovich13 Oct 2023 11:51 a.m. PST

For those of you who enjoyed the "The Patriot"…well…that's nice. I mean in the confines of a cinematic entertainment that takes you away from your everyday life for a few hours, sure fine.

But it sure as hell ain't history. It's utter garbage. And yet millions upon millions of Americans who don't study the time period at all beyond what they consume on TV and in the theater (which is most Americans, or at least many) actually think that that movie IS HISTORY. And they form their opinions and assertions of history based on trash like that movie.

And as Brandon says, that's very dangerous and socially disastrous.

Gibson "grudge" movies are mostly no fun for people who know some history. I liked him better when I was dumber. And I am not that much smarter today….

He is interested and very passionate about his subjects. Like all individuals he can be preachy at times. I watch him, but also watch others. He is like books; I read a lot and have my opinions (based on years of research and reading)but its refreshing to read someone e who you disagree with at times.

As to Mel Gibson I don't care for his historical movies. Just a personal thing. But years ago when I was working g for the National Park Service I met him and some of his family at the North Bridge in Concord Ma. He was very polite and really interested about the events of that day. it was a pleasant late fall day so nobody else there. We talked for about an half hour.
