Slingshot issue 347 includes an introductory article to wargaming the Early Medieval period ("Dark Ages"). The author recommends the following rules, which is your preference?

Ravenfeast (free download)
Lion Rampant (Osprey)
Saga
Hail Caesar (Warlord Games)
Age of Penda
Dux Brittaniarum

(or add your own favorite)

Probably Dux Britanniarum for me as it gives a good narrative game and provides commanders with decisions to make (even in a shieldwall fight) – mind you so does Age of Penda, Glutter of Ravens and Andy Callan's venerable Dark Age Infantry Slog

Dux Bellorum (also by Dan Mersey) as a specific set.
James Morris is developing a set called Midgard that looks interesting (it includes fantasy elements that can be ignored). If it's ready within 6 months might make the poll!

I'm a fan of all these rules. I would also add Crusader by Crusader Miniatures.

My favorite is Baron's War by Footsore Miniatures, their supplement, Conquest, does a great job with the "dark age" period.

Ravenfeast and Saga for me.

Field of Glory and MeG.

Dux Bellorum is very good for small to medium battles. And of course To the Strongest for big bashes!

I guess Saga wins by default, it's the only one of those I've played.

DBA and Hordes of the Thing (pure historical) are what the local group uses. We have done many Age of King Arthur games with these two.
