Yes, Five Hundred Thousand years!
Which is supposedly before we think Homo Sapiens entered the scene.

So you want your "cavemen" to have a wood shelter? Well, go right ahead.

It's likely to have been made by Homo erectus, or Homo heidlebergensis. Homo sapiens only evolved about 200,000 years ago I think.

There are those who speculate (NOT the 'ancient aliens)
rhat the planet has seen the coming and going of other
sivilizations than our's.

Or maybe, super anxious to make significant discoveries, they are overinterpreting what they have found, a few rocks and a few old pieces of wood, that were not worked by hominids. Or their dating technique may have been influenced by other factors. Of course it's interesting, and could prompt further funding, so it's going to be publicized. If it proves homo sapiens and the dating is correct, it almost doubles the span of sapiens existence on earth.

Ed, that is a pet theory of mine.

It took alien technology to do woodwork?

Man our ancestors must have been lame!

Just wait until they find a 500,000 year old canoe. Made of wood originating from a different continent. That will initiate a lot of gibbering denial…

Well, Texaswalker, the various articles you can find out there are fairly clear— the two pieces of wood are notched by tool marks, and the notches fit together like the classic Lincoln Logs toys. Hard for that to happen to two different pieces of wood by accident or nature.

It's already known that the precursor species to Homo Sapiens used stone as tools; as one article states, it would be natural to assume they'd use such an abundant and easily manipulated material as wood. This find offers more validity to that assumption. In some ways, it's more amazing that we found the preserved wood than discovering early humanoids worked it for structural purposes.
