Hey guys! The panzer III is one of my favorite tanks and I want to include some in a new force. However I'm playing Normandy at the moment and wanted to know how common they were on the western front in 44. Would you see whole tank platoons of them or were they just attached to other units as reserves or put in rag tag groups? (I'm referring to the late war versions of the panzer III like the Ausf L, M and N) Thanks :) |

The first hit from a web search was this: link That seems to answer the question. |

They were used as command tanks in captured tank units. Panzer Bn 100 had some, as did the Somua battalion in 21st Panzer Div. Zetterling and Jentz list the Panzer holdings for all units in Normandy but I'm away from my books at the moment. Wrt the link above, Stugs were very commonly reported as "Mark IIIs" in British after action reports, to the eternal confusion of historians and wargamers, the same thing happened in Operation Epsom. The only actual Pz III equipped unit I'm aware of which fought in NWE was Panzer Kompanie Mielke at Arnhem. |

I was watching a video about the 82nd airborne at La Fière Bridge on D-Day, and there was a Pz III mentioned in the group of attaching tanks. Can't tell what type. Here's the link if it comes thru YouTube link If not search for: "La Fière Bridge on D-Day And The Battle For The Causeway: 6-9 June 1944" |

The Pz III at La Fiere was one of the command tanks with 100th Pz Bn. |
