Hello! I'm painting some infantry Zouave units in 10mm. I remember reading about their distinctive uniforms and didn't want to make an egregious mistake. How far into the war did most Zouave units manage to keep their distinctive regalia? Were any units still wearing colorful vests, red trousers, or fezzes by 1863? Thanks. |

Not long and usually only a company or so. Don't let that hold you back, it's your army. |

Here's an excellent resource: zouavedatabase.com 10 mm? Go nuts! Seriously, what little research I've done indicates that by Spring of 1863 a good many Zouave units had toned it down a bit, that is, they may have retained distinctive bits like the little jackets and red kepis, but gaiters, red pantaloons, sashes and fezzes/turbans had been dropped. Much of the uniform was impractical for a modern army. A reenactor friend with a Zouave impression told me that a person actually needs an assistant to put on a Zouave uniform correctly – something to do with the sash, I think. Hope you will post some photos when you get a few stands finished! |

There were Zouave units in the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war. The Ist Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps at the Battle of the Wilderness (May 1864) included three regiments in full Zouave dress: 146th NY, 140th NY, and the 155th PA. A fourth regiment in the Brigade, the 91st PA, wore modified Zouave dress. To give an idea of Zouaves in the later years of the war, the 140th NY and the 155th PA didn't receive their Zouave uniforms until February 1864. The 146th NY received their distinctive light blue uniforms trimmed yellow in June 1863. |
