Hello.

I have some Spectre minis which I thought of using in an X-Com type game. I have an old Advanced Squad Leader historical map (Suicide Creek) which I thought of using as the world map for jungle fighting scenarios.

The aliens would be Starfinder cardboard pawns, which are either 1. Cthulhu Mythos or 2. More lighthearted (if that can be said) lore. I know X-Com is pretty dark but I think you know what I mean.

In terms of system, I even thought about converting stats from ASL to modern / scifi equivalents so a separate battleboard would not be needed to resolve combat. Something to give advancement to the squads (Morale increase, Firepower Increase etc.) or just use a different system. The squads would be represented by a single mini (28mm) and they would have rosters with names and stuff. Support weapons listed and when they take losses I would roll on the roster list to see who got wounded/killed. Something like the Squad Combat series from the John Tiller games on PC.

Another option is to use the map as an RPG hexcrawl and see what happens when coming up to enemy forces, roll up to see what they come across (aliens, traps, weapon cache etc.) and resolve the situation using either skills or combat on a separate battleboard. I don't know which RPG to use as the engine yet. Something that would work fast but has some crunch.

Do you guys have any ideas for a mashup game of alien hunting?

Two Hour Wargames (caveat: I'm a fanboy). link
Get the free version, see if you like the system, then splurge on a fluffed up version: link
Rules are designed for solo play, with enemy force counters (you suspect they are out there, but don't know for sure until you get close enough to resolve). But playing co-op and head to head are easily done. Mechanics for your troops increasing/decreasing in abilities. Not very crunchy so minimal bookkeeping.

Depends on the type of game you want: fast and furious or slow and meticulous; lots of dice rolling or more predictable outcomes; lots of meta gaming or just get into it (deciding on which knife a trooper should have or all knives have the same stats); etc.

I wrote for THW a full solo game with campaign and scenarios called 5150 Gaea Prime – First Defense which is basically X-Com.

You can read a full campaign in my blog: link

The ruleset is OOP but if you email Mr. Ed Teixeira, I'm sure he will send you a copy.
