Hello! I'm painting some infantry Zouave units. How far into the war did most Zouave units manage to keep their distinctive regalia? Were any units still wearing colorful vests, red trousers, or fezzes by 1863? Thanks. |

It's fairly well known that the Elite Gerndarmes charged as part of Guyot's Guard Heavy Cavalry division at Waterloo. In earlier campaigns – 1809, 1812, 1813-14 – did they also have this battlefield role? Did they fight in any other battles? What did they actually do off the battlefield when not functioning as heavy cavalry on it? |

Peninsular War: In various detachments, the riots in Madrid, Medina de Rioseco, the Astorge siege, the Ciudad Rodrigo siege, as well as immediate security of the Imperial HQ, literally setting up Napoleon's quarters daily on the march. Russia: Borodino, rounding up arsonists in Moscow, coving the remnants of the grande army's retreat at Berezina. Post Russia/Sixth Coalition: Leipzig Campaign of France: Montmirail, Vauchamps They were nicknamed the Immortals by the rest of the Guard because they did not have battle honors on their colors, but their role should not be trivialized. They protected the politically important of the Napoleonic Empire, protected the Imperial Household on the March, and did what they could to quell civil unrest in bad situations like the Madrid Riots and the burning of Moscow. They suffered horrible loses just like all the rest of the Grand Armie in Russia and still played a combat role against the sixth coalition and the defense of France. Often scattered into detachments, it can be fleeting pinning down their contributions beyond these well known examples. |

Would they have been involved in military intelligence in any way, i.e. rooting out spies? |

Tacitus, you might have to say you want to know about American Civil War Zouave uniforms. Some people don't read the post fully. |

Yes, Major Function, you are not wrong. I will try again. |

The bug has struck again. Two simultaneous or near-simultaneous posts appear in entertainingly wrong places. |
