Really like these rules for period feel, but the TQ rolls really slow things down and make it difficult to finish large scale battles. Has anyone constructed house rules to speed This up with an alternative?

Not so much house rules but a different way of applying the same methodology.

We started by reworking the original QRS so that it was (a) more readable (b) easier to use [mostly by colour coding results of the TQ throw and shading those results on the table the same colours] and (c) including more rules and processes on the QRS so we didn't need to go to the rules as often.

Next step was to use D20 instead of 2D6 and colour the faces of the dice to match the results of the TQ test. Each troop quality has its own die colour so you just selected the appropriate die, rolled it and looked up the colour in the effect tables to find the result.

This speeded up play considerably but we also began to get frustrated by some poorly written rules and often found situations the rules didn't clearly cover. Luckily we then found ver 2 of the rules and used those to answer many of those problems – but not all.

It is still very much a work in progress but we have managed to play a couple of reasonably large games (about 500pt plus generals) to a conclusion in about 5 hours actual playing time.

We have added a fair amount of our own interpretation though so probably we have a 'development' from a base of GaPa rather than just added a few house rules.

Sounds good! Would you be able to share your qrs and changes?

I think I still have a copy of one of the early QRS sheets using 2D6 that might make more sense as they don't have so many of the changes we have made included.

The problem is that, because we are still working on the rules, we haven't made formal notes of what has & hasn't been changed beyond the rewritten QRS and most of it is scribbled notes on bits of paper.

Do you have an e-mail I could send it to ? May take a day or two to find the best one to send first as I'm in the middle of DIY in the workshop and access to notes etc is limited.

Well, it sounds as though it would be better to be patient and let your group work through things.

Instead of rolling dice for each individual unit or action, you might consider using an averaging or auto-success mechanic. Averaging involves specifying average results for certain games like sonic exe, which reduces the need for individual dice rolls. Auto-success can be applied to low- or common-stakes actions, allowing them to be resolved automatically without the need to roll a dice.
