Just wondering if anyone is using Flames of War: Great War – which is aimed at trench warfare – for the more open warfare of the initial phase of WWI? Does anyone make Great War army lists for 1914? |

I have participated in a few FoW Great War games for the Middle East campaigns which were more fluid. They played decent I suppose. What I learned in all of my FoW Great War games (with or without trenches) was that I didn't particularly like the core rules. I found that while every situation seemed to be covered and all the rules were simple, there were alot of those simple rules. So many rules that I was busy looking up rules rather than playing the game. That was my experience in about a dozen or so games. I ended up using a homebrew ruleset for my early war WW1 games. |

Done a few WWI games using FOW from the days of version 3.0. I never use the current version Ver4.0 for FOW. Also, I have many of the old FOW WWI Yahoo group files, again for Ver1.0 to Ver3.0 period on my computer. They cover almost all the nationality and different eras for FOW WWI gaming… like Ottomans, Russians, Americans etc…plus the Western front. Should note I use 20mm collections, with enlarged basing instead, of the common 15mm. Lots more market available miniatures and equipment. |

I recall that the old Avalon Hill game "1914" included, separate from the rules, a glossy booklet that contained all sorts of unit information – like Corps organizational charts – and, I recall, OOBs/Army Lists for Germany, France and the UK for the early 1914 campaign. Great game. |
