Hi
I am keen to make some of my own paper ww2 miniature ships – around 1/6000 scale – (i like trying to make paper miniatures at a micro scale) – what rules would be good fo solitaire wargaming?

I like the sound of the Command at Sea rules but can they work for 1/6000 and also solo? o BGG its listed as 1-8 players, but then in a forum someone mentions its not so good because it relies alot on not knowing where you opponent is

- if not that, any other rules – i see Naval Thnder, Battleship Command, Fix Fire and Strike, Theres the EFFING sCHEER, Clash of Fleets, Stationes Manned and Ready – all on WGV -any of these to be recommended?

General Quarters 3 is good, and plays fine solo

Nimitz

what is Nimitz – you mean the DvG ? i am not really interested in a solitaire boardgame, – GQ3, i have not looked into thanks i will check it out

colkitto10 Sep 2023 4:48 a.m. PST

Nimitz is Sam Mustafa's relatively recent (and generally well recieved) set of naval rules:

I was planning on playing 1/6000 "centimeter Nimitz"

The 4x6 board ends up close to a fairly standard 22x30

GeorgBuchner10 Sep 2023 6:08 a.m. PST

thanks for that, i had not heard about Nimitz at all, but yes Mustafa does generally good games so thats another one to check out!

just regarding GQ3 though – does the rulebook come with all the data you need for ships etc – is it complete in itself?

i need to some more reviews of things

GQ3 includes all the ship data, yes.

i picked up Nimitz and they look good, but i would also want something more complex -i like those near impossible rules for some inexplicable reason

i looked at gq3 but the scale of 10cm = 1000yds means one would need an enormous playing area yes? to do something like Denmark Strait you would need a like a 3metre x 3metre space which is too big for me

Command at Sea sounds like it can be scaled down more easily

GQ3 can be played with half centimeters instead of full centimeters. For 1/6000 scale ships it should be played that way. ODGW provides half centimeter turn gaubes and rulers for downloading. They are specifically designed to be used with 1/6000 scale.

oh nice – oh regarding GQ – i just saw that one can buy gq1 cheaply on navwar.com. Given how poor the australian dollar is atm, this is a more affordable option, Is GQ1 still playable and worthwhile?

GeorgBuchner11 Sep 2023 7:11 a.m. PST

actually scrap that – it seems navwar needs me to fill out an order form and post it to them – add that and the time involved to the process makes it not worthwhile, guess i should just look at GQ3 on teh Old dominion website

Our group has been very happy playing with 1/2400 ships using GQ 3 for WW II and its brother, Fleet Action Imminent, for WW I on an 8 x 6 table using the reduced scale so it should work on a smaller area.

colkitto11 Sep 2023 1:40 p.m. PST

One of the GQs is actually out of stock at Navwar. I thought it was GQ1 but I would need to check. I got the impression that we were lucky to have had the reprint relatively recently and that it wasn't going to be coming back.

They do have a computerised order form, but you still have to post it. The service is usually pretty quick, but I can see that might not be quite so attractive from Australia.

With regards to ground scale (you mentioned GQ-3), you can easily change it in any rule set.

The simplest situation is when the rule set characterizes distances in terms of full-scale units, like 1000 yards. So all written rules, tables, etc. in that rule set refer to 1000s of yards. Then, all you need to do is create your own measuring tape or stick where every 1000 yards is some arbitrary distance apart (1 inch, 2 inches, 1/2 inch, 4 millimeters, etc.). Done.

thanks – that is certainly much easier way to go aboutt hings. I think i am used to scale challenges brought about by napoleonic rulesets and all their command level variations.

GeorgBuchner15 Sep 2023 11:26 p.m. PST

i got Command at Sea now and also GQ3 – i was too tempted by both , after watching som yt vids – i like aspects of both

and i think both have some good considerations for scales

one thing though about using a smaller scale – if they 1cm = 1000yds or perhaps 2 cm equals 1 nm then what happens for encounters that occurring within that range?

would it be best then to kind of telescope in the scale on that particular action ? ( i doubt i will ever be doing anything where htis is happening in multiple locations)- like increasing the scale as ships get closer

is this something people do?
