The Gary Cooper movie cannot be beat. Just look at the cast; Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy, Susan Hayward, Donald O'Connor, and Broderick Crawford. The only weak part of that movie was that it glossed over the basic training phase of the story, so you don't get to see SGT Markoff's tyrannical behavior until they reach the fort. The Telly Savalas movie spent more time showing the SGT's tyrannical behavior during the training phase. It also has some very good battle scenes. In that respect it is a better action movie than the Gray Cooper movie. However, the whole plot line of the story is glossed over and comes across as very weak. The BBC mini-series was very well done. It stays very true to the original novel. Figuring out how to see it is a problem though. It was on YouTube for a while but I don't think it is there anymore. The 1926 Ronald Coleman/William Powell movie is also very good, but is is too hard for a silent movie to compete with anything these days |

I did watch the 1926 version. Major de Beaujolais has gone a bit native, wearing a djellaba over his uniform, which looks quite dashing. In fact, it looked so great, I had to do a conversion of one of my officers. For just watching, I probably have to go along with the advocates of Gary Cooper. Grelber |
