I love it when a how-to video uses only paints I've already got:

nice results too.

Who uses an airbrush here? I am sure they take longer because cleaning but are the results worth it?

As the kids would say, that is 'sick', meaning amazing.

Beautiful job, but for me, waaaaay too much work for the average wargame mounted unit.

Absolutely glorious! But as said I am not sure I have the commitment for a 28mm regiment. Maybe the odd general….

Way beyond what most of us could attempt, even if we had the time. One surprise was the lack of any markings on the face or above the hooves, the fetlocks. They add so much in 1/72 certainly and, in my case, cover a multitude of errors in my painting. Glad to see eyes left black, without white, however. I also noted a comment that the challenge is greater when the horse is in harness, with a saddlecloth etc, which I do find also.

That is wonderful work. I agree, too much for more than a single display piece.

The guy is skilled, but I would never paint like that. Three highlights for the teeth…

Airbrush – not much point using it unless it gives you an effect you wouldn't otherwise get. In this case, such a smooth, even basecoat on large model might take 4 or 5 coats, so it makes sense

No markings – yes, not very horsey. Usually lower legs would be darker on a bay as well

His palette – I can't believe the paints didn't dry out – most people use a wet palette. Too many similar colored paints – could be simpler

I would say if you're going to put this much effort in, you should attempt some sort of transparency, which will make it look more like animal skin. Oil paints work, I use oil wipe method. With acrylics, I would create very contrasty layers and then airbrush on a transparent ink, artist paint or something like the Vallejo smoke (or even contrast paint), this will blend and give a transparent effect

On the other hand, I would probably mess it up. Perhaps There's a reason I don't do 54mm

A can of spray paint in the appropriate color, highlights in a lighter color, some markings, mane and tail, a wash, the harness, and your're done! Looks good on the table.

Great for 54mm & 75mm but too long to do for 18mm but you still can paint great looking horses without doing this much work.
