"Historical films are difficult to do well. They require endless research to prevent them from becoming inaccurate, huge budgets to cater to the elaborate sets, costumes, and props required, and must often strike a balance between staying true to history and entertaining a modern audience. It's certainly no easy feat. Despite the difficulties, there are many medieval films that have been incredibly successful, both commercially and critically. From A Knight's Tale to Henry V to The Name of the Rose, the best medieval movies are must-watches for any film fan…"

Kingdom of Heaven: they did their homework. I've read up on the period they portrayed. They did a nice job, overall.

Saladin was far more chivalrous, at first, than the Europeans. The Leper King was well portrayed.

I am a fantasy gamer, and I loved how they portrayed the European defenders as marking out their missile ranges, with painting rocks on the defender's side, only -- brilliant! There was one scene where a Muslim warrior turned his head back, to look at one of the marker rocks, but he kept going forward, without notifying his leaders of it…

On the historical side, they portrayed the villains rather well. There was a rogue Duke(?) who kept attacking the Muslim caravans, in open defiance of his King, and the Templars were not very innocent, within the conflict, either. I thought it was really a good romp, cleaving close to history. Cheers!

A bits of dichotomy here between, to me, "best" as in "most accurate" or "most enjoyable." 42flanker's list covers my choices on both view points. I used "The Warlord' when I taught world history as an introduction to the Medieval era as it covered a number of the interesting aspects in an entertaining way.

IMHO, Japanese historical movies tend to rank a notch above Hollywood movies, in terms of accuracy. One common complaint I have about Hollywood historical movies are the dreadful costumes, like i;;-fitting armor, for example. Japanese movies tend to be more respectful of the history & costumes of the time. This is a reason why I appreciate these movies.

I love watching Jean Reno smash people in the face with his shield (not just a defensive weapon) at the beginning of "Just Visiting" (2001).

I found myself coveting the model of London the camera flies over during the intro credits of the 1944 Lawrence Olivier version of "Henry V."

Like several others, I do not understand leaving out "The Warlord."

Not a movie but the Spanish TV series El Cid is very good. Pretty accurate too.

Ivanhoe shouldn't be forgotten. I saw it as a boy when it first came out and I have re-watched it many times since.

Joan of Arc (1948) with Ingrid Bergman and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) with Milla Jovovich both had some memorable and spectacular scenes.

Henry V (1989) – Branagh

Macbeth (1971) – Polanski

The Legend of Suriyothai (2001) – the 5-hour Thai DVD release, not Coppola's hack job editing.

The Vikings (1958) – Kirk Douglas is The Viking!

Robin Hood (1922) – Douglas Fairbanks (as always, Flynn only aped Fairbanks performance).

Not movies, but two great Heian period Japanese TV drama series I got this year from SamuraiDVD.com

Taira No Kiyomori (1989)

Minamoto Yoshitsune (1987)

Last week, I rewatched The Seven Samurai (I wouldn't count that as Medieval though). A thought occurred to me as I was admiring a nice "glurk!" cry by a dying brigand — Japanese movies benefit by not having a single stupid Wilhelm Scream!

El Cid, Henry VIII (Branaugh version), The Warlord, The Vikings are all good, although not entirely accurate. But they are movies!

Sorry Henry V!
