Still curious.

evbates06 Sep 2023 7:56 a.m. PST

I do not think they are posting a lot of information that is supposed to be posted to the membership.

Historicon website, click home, click past Historicons. Says 2,334 for 2023.

Talked to a representative on the Saturday morning and he told me it was up there but not probably a record, but certainly more than recently years.

Seemed like there were at least that many in Wally's Basement during the Thursday Night opening.

@TSD101. Thanks. As an HMGS member I never received a post-con report/email and I didn't know that info was available on the site.

"not probably a record"

Not anywhere near, I should think. We were figuring 3,500-4,000 back in the 1990's. But I don't know what we have by way of statistics from the period. Evidently there is or was no central file of information for HMGS. Board members did things on their own computers, and when they left the board, the information did as well. Well, we (were) the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society, and the procedure was very 18th Century, so I suppose that's fair enough.

Wow. 2300? Pretty far down.

Mini Wanderer09 Sep 2023 7:04 a.m. PST

Considering we're still bouncing back from COVID, I think it's a respectable number. It's going to take a little while for us to hit the 3000 mark again.

I hope we do see 3,000 again, but I wouldn't count on it. Too many of the historical miniatures gamers I knew in those old conventions are dead, or too decrepit to drive that far, and there aren't as many young ones. Maybe you can fill the gap with F&SF gamers and box gamers, but RPGs and computer games have hit them too--and at some point, you've stopped holding a historical miniature gaming convention. I'd say leave it in one place and put on the best convention we can, accepting that the numbers aren't always something we can control.

Sorry to rain on the doom and gloom, but I went and had a great time!

I had no shortage of games to play and the dealer hall was excellent. It certainly looked and felt like a lot of people were there.

I'm definitely going back next year!

@TSD101

Can you exert your Google'fu to come up with the attendance for the 2023 Cold Wars?

Paladin X12 Sep 2023 5:31 a.m. PST

Our gang was in attendance, five of us, and we all had a great time! Don't see Gloom and Doom for HMGS in the future as this always comes up in this forum. My son and his friend are in their 30's, and there were all ages gaming and having fun. Plenty of games to pick from and the Dealer area was full of vendors. Love the downtown area location too.

Bottom line: it was well attended, great job HMGS!
