I think they did for special activities like attacking a breach or defending key points. Sadly I don't have any references to cite. |

Regarding the Schellenberg, this blog post details a brigade comprised of 3 battalions of converged grenadiers from Austrian, Franconian & Swabian regiments: link |

Even in the LoA there were converged grenadier battalions eg by the French for advanceguard duties but also other countries used them for special duties. |
