Originally published in 1911, this classic might be seen as Rosny's masterpiece. Set around 80,000-100,0000 years ago, the novel concerns a trio of young Neanderthal hunters (Naoh, Nam, and Gaw) sent forth into the wider world to somehow find a source of fire, that most vital resource of prehistoric life which their "horde" had lost when they were driven from their shelter in an enemy attack. As usual, the novel varies from the fine film version which alone makes it worth reading. Several different types of hominid are encountered during the course of the novel, and while very few types were known in 1911, more recent finds would partly confirm the realism of Rosny's vision of prehistory. Some groups are hostile (the Kzamm and the Red Dwarfs) while others(the Wah) are helpful, and some are neutral (the blue-haired men). The Afterward of the version that I obtained from Amazon is a worthwhile read in and of itself.

Interesting. I've only seen the film, which I thought was enjoyable.
