Yes, the Allies were hoping to get the Italians completely back in the war on their side and thought that an airborne landing near Rome could prevent the Germans from taking over. The operation came within a whisker of actually taking place. The planes were actually on the runway with propellers turning when the operation was cancelled. Good thing: it would have been a disaster.

I think I read that Gavin (82nd CO) went back to his tent and cried with relief when the mission was cancelled. He thought they would be slaughtered.
