It has been a long time in the coming but finally got around to refighting Manzikert. And it did not go well for the Emperor

Great AAR on a battle that changed history. And IIRC Alp Arslan wasn't even seeking battle, he was actually on his way to campaign against the Fatamids in Egypt who he and his Ulema considered to be Islamic heretics. So what would have happened if the Byzantines shadowed Arslan's forces and didn't engage, letting them go bleed themselves out in a long campaign in Egypt?

Historically it would have been better for Romanus IV and probably his empire if he had indeed been killed on the field. Recent literary work has even suggested that the treachery of Romanus' subordinates may have been aided with Turkish support in one form or another. Personally I don't think the Dukas clan needed any outside incentive for treachery. SB brings up an interesting point about the possibility of the battle actually never occurring at all. Time would have benefitted the Eastern Romans in terms of training and recruiting and may have given Romanus more stability as Emperor.

Love those Hinchliffe Byzantines! I own a bunch as well. My first ancients army. Your game looked great! I always find lots of interesting things at your website.

Great looking game and would have been fun to play.

Poor Byzantines! To stake so much on one battle and then bungle it so badly. History never recovered.

Is there an Order of Battle for the game?

Ponder on,

Yes there is an order of battle. I shall post it on the scenarios section of my website when I get around to it. legio-wargames.com
