…a Landmark Sci-Fi Show

"When we think about sci-fi, about marching out into the stars and encountering aliens, we think of the future, of a time decades or centuries from now when humanity has technologically evolved to the point of interstellar travel. Stargate, however, took a shortcut. This was a franchise which asked, "what if we could just go out there right now?"

What resulted was a story so compelling that it stretched beyond its original movie to over 15 seasons of television across three shows. And although it might not often be counted alongside the other Star greats of Wars and Trek, Stargate deserves to be remembered as nothing less than a landmark sci-fi show, because it showed us that humanity's interstellar evolution wasn't a fantasy of the future: it was something we could build today…"

It needs to be remembered for two reasons.

The Jaffa and stargate are quite cool! I also think the rings can be interesting on the game table. I Liked the series!

Thanks

Was surprised to find that I enjoyed Atlantis more.

Really liked the move, not the show.

One of my favorites. The title music was inspirational IMO.

Glad I'm not the only one who like it…

Noteworthy that they found a way to make a TV sci-fi series that actually had a viable premise for not building new starship and exotic alien world set pieces every week.

That allowed them to use the effects budget where it would be most effective and actually let them focus on characters and stories.

Big fan of the show. My wife and I do a rewatch almost yearly.

I'm not a fan of the film; it just struck me as silly, failing to explain the less than believable cultural situation. The show makes it work.

Atlantis is good as well, though I think the Wraith are a nonsensical race (the later, in show explanation of their origins helps, but not all that much).

Never saw SG-Universe, having read too many negative reviews.

One of the great things about SG-1 was how they built an over-arching plot with a lot of depth to it, and managed also to have some solid physics elements included— the episode with the black hole is exceptionally clever on that front. Of course there's a lot of handwavium and non-existent "elements" too, but that's just the set-up.

And yes, O'Neill's* dry one-liners are a highlight of the show, especially when he's mocking the various ridiculous premises they confront.

*"Two ‘L's."

And T'ealc serves as a great straight man. Christopher Judge is under-rated as an actor; he nails the character.

I think maybe some people are put off by the first few episodes, which after the pilot seem a little mundane: SG-1 travels to another world that looks like Canada, meets the descendants of ancient humans there, and mucks around with the "problems" with those ancient cultures. A bit yawn.
But then episode 6 "Cold Lazarus" is reached, takes the drama and characterization up several notches, then two episodes later we learn of the Asgard, and the show takes off running.
