There is an inevitable conflict between sensible 1/144 scale figures and out of scale unrealistic "detailed " circus freaks.

Despite going for either at 4ft its had to tell some bases apart, following the TMP tip I have no started to shape bases. Bases with either a SAW or LSW have the front corners chambered which helps at long range. NCO's in contact with the PC by radio a rounded front edge. and PC's a convex front edge and a concave rear edge.

It makes working out who is in contact with who quick and easy, nothing worse than trying to find the Radio men. so to 1/144 players how do you do it?

PS. SFMG's are always on tripods that are big enough to see at longer ranges as aer Auto Grenade launchers and some light/medium mortars so these have not been afflicted with the above problem.

Is it OK if I steal this line from you?

For 6mm I use different formations of figures for different troop types. I imagine the same thing would work for 1/144.

I am with Martin on this – for my 6mm WWII troops three troops is a command stand, four is an infantry stand – the heavy weapons I can figure out

Wolfhag, be my guest, but I'm not sure it will curry favor with many folk.

Martin Rapier – Not sure it would work for some 1/144. We more or less run at 1:1 figures so the team is what it is. Many are 2 man, SAWs, RPGs , Sniper teams, etc. so not much flexibility there, but it is worth remembering it may be useful in some circumstances. Thanks.

Coloured marks on the edge of the base work well

I like the idea of slightly different bases to define the unit type.

I make labels on the computer, here's my YouTube video on how I go about it. Most my stuff is 15mm, but I will do the same for my 10 and 12mm stuff. When you're the designer, you can format it however you want.

Ryan Rabies – Each to their own, labels are too intrusive for me personally, but its all about what you see as the best compromise.
