Ok the rules allow it but increasingly less often as the quality of French infantry declined. I have a few questions relating to rules. Please note I am only interested in the period 1809-14.
I limit French battalions to either 12 or 9 Figures on the tabletop.
Why is the Grenadier Company one figure whereas the Light company has two figures? Why do the rules usually allow the Grenadiers to form on the Right? Is it to maintain a three Fig frontage whether or not the Lights are skirmishing? After 1808 if above was not the case the frontage should be reduced to two Figs as a Column of Attack/division should not be allowed as even Nap ordered himself?
This is an Empire rules question not opportunity for some of you to quote regulations in French! Don't want to offend but.

Addressing the simple part of your question first, the two voltigeur one grenadier think in a 9 figure battalion is to keep total elites at one third. Prior to 1808 (and especially before the conversion of a fusilier company to voltigeurs) the grenadiers stood outside the battalion structure being used as the battalion/regiment/brigade commander saw fit. After the six company reorganization, as you note, it no longer makes sense. Now that the grenadiers were part of a division they would be the front right, but not hanging on the outside of the column.
But, all of this is really minutiae below the scope of empire's interest. The moment you remove a stand of casualties all the formations are blown anyway.

Thanks Valmy92. Seems one one else has anything to add.
