Hi all, I'd like your opinions/suggestions on a suitable set of rules to use with my 6mm WW2 microarmour, please. I'm looking for a set which will allow me to play at 1 base = platoon, on a 6' x 4' table, and is suitable for solo play.
Many thanks.

Fistful of Tows 3. Its a bit pricey but there is a lot of organizational information from WW2 to modern. The rules are simple to follow but a bit more complex than Rapid Fire.

Rapid Fire 2 or reloaded ($5 cost) – a very simple rules set that fills your requirement and easy to play.

For each rules set a model represents 3 to 5 vehicles (platoon) so 3 vehicles is a company. A stand of infantry is a platoon or support weapon team (mg, bazooka, piat, etc. ).

There are videos for each. FFT3 has a free set of intro rules for you to try on their website.
Rapid Fire has a lot of scenarios that can be used for FFT3.

Another vote for Fistful of Tows 3. We use it tor WWII and modern. Very good games.

There is also O Group, available from Too Fat Lardies. We played around with the sequence for that one, each side taking turns to activate a unit, rather than one side doing all of its activations, then swapping over. Made the game a bit more dynamic.

Rommel is 1 stand to one company.
Spearhead is 1 stand to 1 platoon
Battlefront:ww2 is 1 stand to 1 squad

All work well in 6mm

I'm another for Battlefront, I use 15mm ground scale but with 6mm vehicles and figures. Plus there are scenarios and extra rules on their website.

I like Blitzkrieg Commander for 6mm/285th scale micro armor.

Command Decision

Based on the criteria you have laid out, noggin2nog, I think Fistful of TOWs 3 is a very good set of rules for what you are looking for.

I also like Mein Panzer which is down a level of command from what you are looking for. That set is at a level of individual vehicles and guns and squad and team level for infantry.

Shardik07 Aug 2023 1:43 p.m. PST

Another vote for Blitzkrieg Commander. The activation rules are good for solo

BrockLanders07 Aug 2023 7:46 p.m. PST

Combat HQ is 1 stand equals 1 platoon and has some very clever game mechanics

Martin Rapier08 Aug 2023 12:54 a.m. PST

For solo, probably Blitzkrieg Commander or Fistful of Tows.

Much as I love Spearhead, it isn't so good solo and neither is Command Decision, as they both use orders.

You could easily tweak Rapid Fire for 6mm I guess.

Thanks for the replies guys,
I think I'll give Fistful of Tows a go – I have tried Blitzkrieg Commander when it first came out, but didn't think much to the way friendly units would have to gang up to inflict losses on a single enemy unit.
As a follow up to my original questions – is there a preferred/common basing for FFT? My stuff was based over 30 years ago to play against a friend at Uni, so I have infantry based 20mm x 10mm, guns to fit, and vehicles unbased, but I think I'd like to base vehicles, too, this time around; especially smaller stuff like bren carriers, etc.

Shark Six Three Zero08 Aug 2023 5:53 a.m. PST

Basing for FFT3 is :

Infantry on a 20mm or 0.75" base frontage, so I use a 20mm square or round base. this is for a platoon or gun/mortar team.

Vehicles are also on the same basing as infatry. But I found some vehicle models a bit to long, so I used a 0.75" x 1" base for the larger vecles. You can use the standard base size if you don't mind a bit of an overhang.

The distance in FFT3 is 1 inch per 100 yards.

Martin Rapier09 Aug 2023 12:09 a.m. PST

My 6mm stuff is all pretty much on 30x30, which works fine for most sets of rules. Personally I find bases a lot smaller than that quite fiddly, and at 1" = 100 yards, encourages far too much bunching up.

It doesn't really matter I guess, as long as it is consistent.

longspear09 Aug 2023 7:35 a.m. PST

I go Rommel and Blitzkrieg Commander IV.

This lists all the platoon = element rules i have attempted. Spearhead tends to be the rules which has the greatest traction and is reasonably easy to learn. The rules are old, but still gives you a good game. For free rules, Corps Commander may be a good choice, but is very complex.

Another set which I am told is rather simple (and fast) to play, is the "Micro Armour: The Game" set from GHQ.

Rather than set, I should say sets. There are WW2 and Modern versions. They have the same basic constructs, but different weapons systems, and I am told that the Moderns set, which was written after the WW2 set, is somewhat better organized and so is easier to learn.

I have never played either, so can't offer a personal opinion. But the comments I have seen from several folks who have played them are that they play easily and quickly, and give pretty satisfactory results (in terms of battles rewarding good tactics, and progressing in a way that feels reasonable/realistic to the players).

The rules are offered for sale on the GHQ website, with a free downloadable "tanks only" starter set. They are also available on Wargame Vault.

I have played "Micro Armour: The Game". I do have both sets of rules and I thought they were pretty good overall but I have not played them in quite a while.

I am gearing up to get into the Fistful of TOWs rules at some point as I do like the games that I have played with those rules.

Meanwhile, here are a couple of pictures from the first turn of a solo Mein Panzer game that I am playing. The scale is a bit smaller though at 1 vehicle = 1 vehicle and an infantry stand is a squad or team.

For 6mm I would go Panzer Korps

GeorgBuchner18 Oct 2023 2:44 a.m. PST

i was wondering also what might go good for 3mm-6mm ww2 armor, – Spearhead is a ruleset i have always wanted to look but never been able to get a copy.
what about Jagdpanzer?

So games with orders are not so good for solo? i am sure there are ways around and compromises that make it work

If you want to go simple give Pz8 a look. Free set of rules for various eras and each era is only two pages! Specifically designed for micro armor and allows a pretty good game in a small area. As I said free so no reason not to give them a look.
