I am rather madly trying to research some of the more obscure and short lived Imperial Guard Cavalry units of the late first empire – Gardes D'honnor, Eclaireurs, and Juene Garde Chasseurs a Cheval. I see some plates that show various pompon colors, and others that display only a single color for all. Does any one know if there was a convention regarding pompons for any of these units? Did they possibly follow the same convention as the line light cavalry units? Thanks, Pat |

Juene Garde Chasseurs a Cheval- scarlet pompom Plume Green at the bottom with top scarlet. I can't find info on the rest as yet as my Napoleonic library is quite large. |

The first two are subjects of two Osprey publications of all the info you need, at minimal expense, and they have what you seek. I know, as they are in front of me here. Jeune (NB the spelling if searching) Garde Ch a Chev are well documented by Rousellot and are as von Blucher tells us. The pompon is not Aurore, as is the cap lace, but instead scarlet (Assuming he, Rousellot, is the ultimate authority of course) |

For the Gardes d'Honneur try this;
But then, when I read Jouineau, I see "There was a pompom the same colour as the squadron at the base of the plume". Which solves nothing! The snag with the Eclaireurs is that there were three very differently turned out regts, but we all only mean the 2nd to be honest. My books suggest the same regs for each squadron's shako pompom. But what was that?????????? |

VonBlucher and deadhead: Thank you, the Juene Garde Escadrons de la Chassseurs a Cheval are quite well documented, and the scarlet pompons per Rousellot what what I had observed as well. As the Lepzig Campaign ended in defeat and the Campaign for France progressed it appears that the Juene Garde Chasseurs a Cheval were wearing multiple styles of head gear: Colpack for Officers, some NCOs, and Trumpeters from the ranks of the Vieille Garde, the Bell topped Shako in some cases, and the shako-rouleau as well. My assumption is that the head gear was determined by either the depot in which the gardes were outfitted or the unit in which they originated. I suppose I phrased my question poorly and too broadly, I was trying to see if anyone knew of a reference document or a set of plates regarding the company pompons colors for Eclaireur Regiments. I believe I resolved my own question regarding the Gardes d'Honnor, as they were not really part of the Imperial Guard and would likely follow the typical light cavalry company pompon color convention. Thanks, Pat |
