A while back, I created a thread on rules for multi-corps ACW battles that include regiments. Yellow Admiral made an interesting suggestion, and I thought it deserved some exploration: what would it take to modify Bruce Weigle's 1871 fast play rules for the Franco-Prussian War to represent ACW battles?

Might be better to use the 1859 rules, so the weapons are closer to the ACW

I'd look at ACW rules instead. What size units are you thinking?

1871 does sound interesting as each stand is a battalion (regiment in ACW terms) but maneuver by regiment (equivalent to an ACW brigade).

Across A Deadly Field is worth a look. Designed for the ACW and big battles, but with individual regiments. Here is a summary of the rules I wrote a while back:

If you want to use the 1871 mechanics, which Bruce himself advocates now, there are ref sheets to enable his earlier sets to be updated to 1871 spec. So you could use one of those earlier ref sheets (eg the one for 1859, as suggested above) to adapt the rules.

Different uniforms. grin

More seriously…

Just off the top of my head:

  • Re-rate small arms for range and casualty rates. ACW armies were not as homogeneously armed as contemporary European armies.
  • Re-rate artillery, and increase the number of types available
  • Carefully evaluate morale effects and outcomes so the battles "feel" more ACW than Continental
  • Rewrite the cavalry rules. ACW armies used cavalry differently than European armies.
I'm sure there's more. The order system might also need modification…? Maybe more terrain types? Different formations and deployment doctrines?

I concur it would be a good idea to mine other versions of the rules (1859, 1866, 1870, 1871) for ideas, especially about extra classes of weapons and less-professional classes of troops. Bruce did a hekkuva lotta work on those rules; cherry-pick his efforts before reinventing the wheel.
