Hi – i would like to know is there some list or index or such online that might present all the many rules for ancients/medieval wargaming?
There are lists aplenty for napoleonic which helped me
but for ancients/medieval things are all over the place and there are rules out there i keep finding which i had never heard of – such as Sword and Spear

what is a good ruleset for using a not too big space – ie dining table size or less, that also suits smaller scale size 5/6mm with bases with many units on them – i am familiar with Strength and Honour, but its seems better for 2d flat pieces if anything yes?

is WandC good? what about the old Warhammer Ancient Battles, or Warmaster Ancients?
does anyone play Field of Glory – it seems pretty comprehensive, and i like FOG napoleonic

I am after a good set for something like the battle of Manzikert 1071

List of a lot of the rules

I would look at Hail Caesar and convert from inches to CMs. I believe it would fit your requirements of a dining room table very well.

Field Of Glory (ancients) is BIG. A typical 800 point game uses a lot of figure, more than the old DBM.
Arte De La Guerre (ADLG) uses smaller armies, about two DBA armies per side and a smaller play area 80x120cm or a condensed version on 80x80cm – and DBA sized armies.

Check out Triumph!

I have used it for multiple medieval battles from Hastings to Hattin.

Figure scale doesn't matter it scales to your base size.

If you are using 6mm figures, avoid rules that require figure removal like WAB, War & Conquest.
Hail Caesar, Field of Glory, DBMM, To the Strongest, Sword & Spear would all work.
To the Strongest is my choice. Plays fast, lots of interesting decisions, and the grid avoids any micromeasuring

thanks for the responses – i see the grid concept come up alot – how do folks create their gridded battlefields exactly? whats the cheapest way? just lay down some string?

Dexter Ward04 Aug 2023 4:51 a.m. PST

Just mark the corners of the squares with small rocks

I have a list of miniatures rule sets here:

To the Strongest uses a grid so you can fit the grid to the size of table you want. If you wanted to use counters it would fit on a piece of paper. I like them a lot.

I made a gridded mat with a ruler, sharpie and piece of felt. I only marked corners.

Once you start play you can "see" the grid quite easily even where the dots are faded or too small.

Thanks , the gridded option does seem like a good approach then also rules where the base size is the scale of measurement

With the Triumph rules do the rules come with some army lists or are they all exclusively on the online database?
I kind of just prefer my rules to be all in one book or two, rather than online

I don't hear anyone talk about Impetus – is it worthwhile?

I also don't really need rules to be fast play – I like ponderous, complex rules to just sift through and simulate things with more than fast play – is there an ancient medieval equivalent of Empire or Legacy of Glory?

Dexter Ward05 Aug 2023 5:02 a.m. PST

If you want ponderous, then WRG 7th (now re-released as Warrior) or Tactica are good.
DBMM and Field of Glory are pretty complex, too. You need to play them frequently to remember all the rules.

GeorgBuchner05 Aug 2023 5:45 p.m. PST

okay great – i was wondering abiout warrior, and DBMM also – it seems popular too still yes?

Legionarius05 Aug 2023 7:34 p.m. PST

Look no further than To the Strongest. Great rules, great games, very flexible and lots of army lists.

GeorgBuchner05 Aug 2023 8:04 p.m. PST

okay so i get the impression most everywhere the 'To the strongest' is the most popular set currently? and then also ADLG? – that one though out of my price range atm
