My guess is that no one knows for sure, pick one and if someone complains, have them provide the data

The Horse Soldiers vol I by Randy Steffen states blue saddle cloths. He also shows illustrations of a saddle blanket being used instead of a saddle cloth, but he does not state a color.

He did find a government contract for horse equipment and a blanket was not mentioned at all.

Blanket color would probably vary by contractor. Anything from grey to blue is probably acceptable.

Check out Rene Chartrand's book entitled: Uniforms and Equipment of the United States Forces in the War of 1812. It is an excellent resource and the one I used to paint my US Dragoon units.

so, what color did you paint your horse blankets?

Try this link: link
About 2/3 of the way down the page is a plate for US dragoons. The blanket is a dark blue with a silver trim line.

Imrie/Risley has their US dragoon with a blue shabraque. Their research was excellent.

Volume II of Military Uniforms in America: Years of Growth, 1796-1851, edited by John Elting shows an American light dragoon officer of the 2d Regiment (1812-1814) with a dark blue shabraque, the same color as the uniform. The plate is on page 43 and is by H Charles McBarron, the noted American military artist.

Which raises the question as to whether the OP means shabraque or horse blanket. The shabraque/saddle cloth is well documented. The horse blanket, not so much.

Brechtel19804 Aug 2023 12:10 p.m. PST

Since the shabraque would necessarily cover the horse blanket the point is moot.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP04 Aug 2023 2:54 p.m. PST

No, it is not. The horse blanket can be used in place of the shabraque for field service.

Brechtel19804 Aug 2023 3:01 p.m. PST

Wasn't the horse blanket used under the saddle for the comfort of the horse?

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP04 Aug 2023 6:30 p.m. PST

Sure It goes over the horse, and the saddle goes on top of it. The saddle does not completely cover it. The saddle blanket in 1833 was 6 feet x 5 feet.

And over the saddle blanket, if it was available, went the shabraque.

No one is arguing that. This back and forth is about your refusal to acknowledge that dragoons could deploy to the field without the shabraque. What am I missing from your train of though?

Brechtel19805 Aug 2023 7:57 p.m. PST

I never said or intimated that idea.
