Do you keep a record of what you paint and how, so you can refer back to it if you need to paint more of a unit, or revisit a technique?

Joe1870 Supporting Member of TMP03 Aug 2023 2:37 p.m. PST

Yes I do – since 2009. Every project, every paint brand, color, and pattern of paint. Being color blind I can't always tell just by looking at a finished model as to all the steps I did years ago.

Sort of, but it is not complete nor does it go back very far. I've always thought I should have been doing that from the beginning (early 1970s), but never really got energized.

I do, it is very handy when returning back to projects.

Major Thom03 Aug 2023 3:20 p.m. PST

I have 2 versions, one in a notebook, the other using MS OneNote.

Nope.

No.

I have a reading log: does that help?

Greylegion03 Aug 2023 6:46 p.m. PST

Yes. There are times that I may take a long break from painting. I need to remember the recipe for what I was working on, when I get back to it.

Sort of. I keep a set of 4x6" cards with the color schemes and order of paint for most projects. If I want to repeat it, I can pull out the card for reference.

Bunkermeister03 Aug 2023 7:28 p.m. PST

Sometimes I write down the project and what paints I used particularly if I intend to increase the size of the units in the future.

The same book has instructions on how to do some conversions I have done over the years in case I need more of something, or for projects I think about but have not finished yet.

Sort of.

KarlBergman03 Aug 2023 7:55 p.m. PST

Yes I do. At my age it is a lot easier to remember what I did if I write it down.

I don't keep a diary, but for certain collections I do write down the miniatures (brand/model) and/or the paints I use(d), so that I can expand the unit later.

I keep a diary that mentions painting figures often.

nudspinespittle Supporting Member of TMP03 Aug 2023 8:37 p.m. PST

No. I really should and have suffered for not having one. Quite a few tribes/units have needed new members at one time or anouther and I fail to get the newbe fitting in well.

mildbill04 Aug 2023 4:49 a.m. PST

No , but I wish I had . Just so I could know how many I have painted.

Altar Boy04 Aug 2023 4:53 a.m. PST

White Dwarf has been including these for some time now.

I am shocked GW hasn't been selling decks on them. Perhaps someone else will.

Since 1997, yes.

Like many above, I keep reference notes about some projects and some paint combos I want to use again, or in case I want to maintain a uniformity among a unit. Or to make repairs for something that might get damaged and I wouldn't remember how I originally painted it.

I especially make notes about what paints I use in tartans, so I don't have to keep re--inventing the pattern and shades each time I want to paint one the same as one I might have done years before.

Zephyr104 Aug 2023 2:26 p.m. PST

I paint squares of colors (& usually label them) on a piece of paper, and keep that with the box of finished painted minis in case I need to match it for future touchups…

DOUGKL04 Aug 2023 6:08 p.m. PST

Like many of the others I keep notes of certain colors I mix or what was used on a particular unit. Since 2016 I have been keeping a log of what I have painted.

BTCTerrainman Supporting Member of TMP05 Aug 2023 8:41 a.m. PST

No. I don't have time for the extra "busy work".

Lucius05 Aug 2023 12:00 p.m. PST

I spend a fair amount of time on basing. I keep good figure painting notes in a journal, but i keep EXACT notes on basing materials.

It is a lot easier to make a new unit fit into an army if the base is an exact match.

I don't keep any kind of diary.

thecornman24 Oct 2023 2:04 p.m. PST

I started keeping a journal to track what I have painted at the beginning of this year when I set a goal of 500 miniatures fully painted by the end of the year. I am currently at 459 completed so I have no doubt I will surpass my goal easily by the end of the year.

Deucey Supporting Member of TMP24 Oct 2023 4:59 p.m. PST

That would be incredibly depressing.

I prefer to delude myself with my painting ToDo list!
