People in the U.K. of a certain age will be aware of desert Island discs when you have to choose a few tunes and a book you are allowed to the complete works of Shakespeare a significant religious text ( l think ) any how which set of Ancient or and Medieval rules would you take and why…….l haven't quite made my mind up,
Humorous comments encouraged !
In essence if you were only allowed one set of Ancient rules which one if you choose,
Saying wise is an option.

Should of said you are allowed to take the complete works of Shakespeare

How to build a Trireme for Fun , profit and escape , useful when stuck on an Island , but are these actually war games rules, l confess that l have little experience of Ancient naval war game rules, despite the importance of Ancient naval warfare and its impact on history , recreating it in miniature has never floated my boat.

Saga. Maybe not the most historical ruleset but certainly the most fun; easy to play solo if I am stuck by myself.

Saga , yep that's cool, still trying to decide my own choice …. Obviously solo play is a given…tempted at the moment towards some extremely complicated , but historically "accurate " set of rules that 3 or more years on a desert island l might finally understand how to play too many to choose from but Warlord is a front contender at the moment

To the Strongest would be it for me.

Lost Battles. After a few years on the desert island, I'd finally have the modifiers for the Army Morale rules memorised.

To the Strongest. Easy to mark out a grid with pebbles on the beach. Great set of rules for solo play

Forgot to mention of course that you would have access to two favourite armies,
That would be an interesting choice too.

I'd take the TtS! v2 draft with me. 20 years of solitude might just see it finished! ;-)

Yep, To the Strongest for me, too. My army choices would be my Bactrian Greeks (lots of different troop types and the first army I painted) and Parthians (as their desert basing would fit nicely on the beach).

I've got to the strongest, your comments will certainly prompt me to get the rules out again,

DBA

The armies are small in saga so I would want to take more than two. Currently really g enjoying age of alexander plus my Roman's. Would need to have the battles in Sicily, turkey and the near east so the island sand and grass could be the board.

DBA – I'd take my generic 2mm figures in a single box, that way I can play any army in the book.
My religious book could be Lost Battles (I don't have a religion) – using the same figures.

Ancients proper would be DBA, though I have to do a certain amount of cutting and pasting to get a proper Big Battle DBA. It seems well adapted to classical warfare, I haven't done a lot and years of solo play might help. Give me a little notice to finish painting the 6mm Carthaginians.

If Medieval is separate, it would be Mersey system. Again, works well solo, and I have trouble with solo so I need all the help I can get.

Tactica – lots of time on the Island

Erzherzog Johann04 Aug 2023 5:14 p.m. PST

DBMM because

a – I've yet to play a game of it that wasn't fun and plausible
b – If I get a rule wrong it won't matter :~}

A question. Would I be allowed access to dbmmlist@groups.io so I could get a clarification?

Cheers,
John

Since games take two players then what use are any rules if alone on a desert island?

Though if I had figures and paint I might actually get caught up…

Erzherzog Johann23 Aug 2023 8:58 p.m. PST

Solo . . .

Joe Legan04 Sep 2023 4:53 a.m. PST

Since when do games take two players? Solo of course! : )
Cheers
