If bocage is emblematic of the fighting in Normandy in WWII, it seems that the Ukrainian War features a lot of these so-called forest lines. Essentially a thin strip of woods separating fields. Sometimes adjacent to a dirt road. Russians favor entrenching there. (Apparently, 'tree bursts' are not a factor any more?) |

Given the ubiquity of drones and lack of thermal imaging I would rather entrench in tree lines than the open. |

I believe both sides have drones with thermal imaging, but I don't know how prevalent they are. There's a Ukrainian video showing Russians concealing mortar pits under plywood (?) camo (drone video in daylight); then night video showing the mortar pits standing out vividly due to thermal imaging (and being bombed). |

The tree lines have been turned into match sticks where the heaviest fighting is happening. There is almost no place to hide except in trenches with overhead cover. The problem the Ukrainians have is there is not enough ammo for all of the targets they can detect. Wolfhag |
